Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a training method partially restricting arterial inflow and fully restricting venous outflow in working musculature during exercise. Exercising with reduced blood flow achieved by restriction of the vasculature proximal to the muscle “kaatsu training”
how does it work?
Pneumatic tourniquet system involves applying external pressure. When the cuff is inflated, there is gradual mechanical compression of the vasculature underneath the cuff, resulting in partial restriction of arterial blood flow to the structures distal to the cuff. Also, the diminution of venous blood flow results in blood pooling within the capillaries.
Can enhance muscle strength and hypertrophy
BFR-RE (blood flow restriction-Resistance exercise) has shown to increase skeletal muscle strength and/or hypertrophy in healthy people, older populations and load compromised
